Elizabeth has been at science camp "Biotech Summer Academy" since Sunday evening at Missouri Western.  They finished up this afternoon and we just got home from picking her up.  The others remain at CIY until Friday.
This was a free camp that they offered.  It was the result of a 2 year grant, and this was the second year.  However, they came in under budget last  year and this year, and have money remaining.  Hopefully they will offer the camp again next year with the remaining funds.
They got to extract DNA, visit the planetarium and did several chemistry experiments in the lab.

The campers stayed in the dorms and ate on campus.  They moved out this afternoon in time for the Kansas City Chiefs to be moving in on Friday, to start their training.

No kids this week-its very quiet.  Emily and Rebecca are at CIY (Christ in Youth), and Elizabeth is at science camp.  Next week we have art camp, and then a weekend retreat back at church camp.  Then camp will be over for the summer season.
Despite the garden beds being watered daily, we are loosing ground.  The temps seem to stay around 100 or higher, and the plants are about wore out.
Tonight I picked several tomatoes, onions, peppers and cucumbers.  Sadly I didn't see anymore cucumbers coming on soon.

I have been making a lot of salsa.  Ideally I want to can it, but it gets eaten to fast.

finely diced fresh tomatoes -  stems removed
finely diced onion
finely diced pepper of choice (I like bell pepper while husband prefers a hot pepper)
Juice of one lime
chopped cilantro (I just cut it with scissors--its quicker)
Salt and pepper to taste
pinch of oregano

pinch of garlic

I start with the lime juice and salt and pepper in the bowl, then add my diced veggies, and keep stirring.  The flavors blend best if you let it sit overnight.  The next day, drain off any excess liquid and enjoy.

As for the veggie amounts, just add what you have on hand or what your tastes are.  You can make the batch small, for one serving, or a caner full to put up.

An Update on the Westboro Baptist Church and Edgerton MO

I have had several ask me for an update on the Westboro Baptist Church scheduled visit to Edgerton MO to picket the Celebration of Life service for the sisters who were murdered.

Hundreds of people showed to block the protesters from Westboro.  However, Westboro did not show up (they had on their church website they were coming).  Either they realized they would be blocked or, they went elsewhere.  (I saw on one news site that they were going to Aurora Colorado to picket the mass shooting that occurred at the movie theater. http://www.examiner.com/article/the-westboro-church-plans-to-picket-the-aurora-shooting-memorial-service )

I can't help but wonder what these people are thinking.

If one of their own dies (if one hasn't already, at some point one will-no one lives forever) do they picket their own funeral?  Or do they disown the person?  Or do they lay the blame on the doctor involved or someone else?

Hummm....Something to think about

Its a birthday!!!!!

The younger twins are 14 today.  Doesn't seem like they should be.

Yesterday we had a girls day and went to Independence MO to the Adventure Oasis water park http://www.ci.independence.mo.us/parksandrec/AdvenOasis.aspx with a groupon.  Instead of  paying $25  to get in, we got in 4 for $18.  It was crowded, but thinned out as soon as the summer school kids and preschools/daycares left.

I spent most of my time floating on a raft down the lazy river, while the girls also explored the water slides,

Today will be presents and the cake/ice cream, and later we will have another day out with a movie.

Hard to believe they are now highschoolers......

Elizabeth and Rebecca at one month old

Emily age 3, Rebecca and Elizabeth age 1

Em 4, Rebecca  3 and Elizabeth 3

Elizabeth age 3 1/2

Rebecca age 3 1/2
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLS!!!!  Enjoy 14.  Momma is proud of the young ladies you are all becoming.

Help us fight the Westboro Baptist Church

If you read my post from a few days ago, then you are aware that two young mothers, who were sisters, t in our rural area were murdered.  The killer confessed and is behind bars.  Tomorrow (Friday) is the girls memorial service.

I am sure you are aware of the Westboro Baptist Church out of Kansas.  They are the ones who picket solders funerals, picketed Joplin after the tornado and more.  It is on their website, http://www.godhatesfags.com/schedule.html  that they plan to picket the service tomorrow.

If you are in our part of Missouri and want to help block them, this is the notice that is being sent around by the woman who is in charge of it.  I know nothing other than what is below:

  • Mt. Zion Baptist Church 5705 hwy Z in Edgerton, Mo
  • The Westboro Baptist Church has posted on their picket schedule that they will picket the memorial service of Britny Haarup and Ashley Key in Edgerton tomorrow! I would like to organize a group to head up there to keep these monsters away from the church and the family! Who's with me?

Let's try to be there by 6pm. If you live in Smithville and would like to follow up there, try to be there by 5:40 in the City Hall parking lot. Their schedule says they will be there from 6:30-7:45, but we should allow for plenty of time to get organized!

Also, please remember 2 things: Wear bright colors in honor of the girls and this is a silent counter protest. Do not speak to these monsters, or engage them in any way. We are here just to serve as a shield between them and the family and friends of Britny and Ashley

    AND

a note from the minister, Jeff Hume:
    • Just a reminder: As a pastor at Mt. Zion we want to ask that any counter protests be peaceful and positive. Jesus commanded Christians to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven."

We don't hate these people - to do so would only bring us down to their level. However, we do not have give in to their tactics. My prayer is that we would be at Mt. Zion in support of the families who a mourning and celebrating the lives of Briny and Ashley. In the process we will show Westboro how a community demonstrates love towards others.

SlimKicker.com

My young friend Christine, helped to create a really neat app.  You can use it on your phone or one your computer.    I have just started using it, and I find it a good motivator to stay on track with diet and exercise, and it also provides information if you are cooking for a diabetic or someone with restrictions.

http://www.slimkicker.com/ is the site.

It is very simple to use.  You just fill in some basic info, (which remains private) such as your age, weight, height and exercise level. It will then tell you how many calories you should be taking in daily.  As you eat (or are trying to decide what to eat) you enter your food and number of servings.  It then tells you the calories and other nutrition information and tracks it for you.

In addition, you can also log your exercise and it will tell you how many calories you have burned and will track it for you.

You can also find recipes.

Not only can us moms use this for fitness or weight loss, but also can be applied for some homeschooling uses such as home-ec, PE (for the exercise) or health classes.

Our body is the Lord's temple, so we should treat it well!!

AND IT IS FREE!!!

Christine, I think you did a great job with this and I wish I had started with this earlier!!  Please check it out and contact her with your feedback.

Three missing area women in the past month

The vehicle that the two missing Edgerton MO women, sisters Britny Haarup and Ashley Key, were believed to have been in has now been found along a country road near the county line.  This is not far from us.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Platte County Sheriff's Office at 816-858-3521 or the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
++7-15-2012 Update.  Sources now say there was blood found on a couch in the home, and some guns are missing, evidently normally kept at the home.  There was no physical evidence found in the truck or in the area around the truck.

The under rated important farm hand

Chevelle is supposed to belong to Emily.  She got her as a tiny kitten from her friend.  But, if you know anything about cats then you know you don't own a cat.  So, Chevelle owns our family....  That is just how it is when you have a cat.

She isn't a pampered house cat. My husband is allergic to cats.  She is a more important cat than that.  She is a hired hand on this farm.  We pay her with food, love and attention, and put up with her kittens and their tricks.

Her job is very important--she is our certified critter control specialist, and she is very very good at it.  She is safer than a trap or poison, which could kill our chickens.  She keeps mice out of the grain and feed, and the moles out of my garden beds.

We know she does her job well, as she brings us her captures.  I supposed this is her way of showing her love....Kind of like when our husband brings home the fish or deer after his day of hunting.   Yesterday I was gifted with a mole. (Lovely...)  Today she came running up from the back pasture with what appears to be a huge mouse or a small rat.  EWWWW.    She doesn't eat them, she just likes to deposit them either at the garage door, or by my car door.  Thankfully she does not leave them at the front door (yet), but should you ever come over and find a dead critter present at the door, you will know she is on guard.   She has also caught small snakes as well, and is very good at leaping to catch flies in her mouth.  Never has she gone after my chickens or the rabbit.

I have to throw them out in the fence line away from the house when she isn't looking (I don't want to hurt her feelings).  If I don't, she promptly brings it right back to me, as if to say, "hey, you lost your gopher or mouse, I brought it back, be more careful next time" .

Yesterdays gopher or mole left at my vehicle door..

Today, either a huge mouse or small rat left at the garage door.

Our dogs also serve a purpose.  If stock gets out, they are alerting us, and Bo when younger would often help round them back up-Duke is still working on that skill.  If someone comes in the driveway that doesn't belong here they alert us.  If someone gets into the barn to steal something, the will "feel" the presence of Duke rather quickly-most likely on their rear end.  He has already run off one questionable character, saving me from having to call 911.

They are also very good at carrying firewood from the woodpile tot he house.  I do mean firewood as in logs, no kindling for them.

Of course when not working, they are on recreation duty, playing fetch with the girls.

Seventeen Magazine and teen girls.....

If you have young girls that read Seventeen Magazine, take a look at this post....

 http://frugal-fabulous.blogspot.com/2012/05/call-me-old-fashion.html

We don't take this magazine for several reasons, this being one of them.

How hot is it???

This is from my friend Kathy B in south MO.....
IT'S SO HOT in Missouri.....the birds have to use potholders to pull the worms out of the ground.

.....the trees are whistling for the dogs.

.....the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance

.....hot water comes from both taps.

.....you can make sun tea instantly.

.....you learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.

.....the temperature drops below 90 F and you feel a little chilly.

.....you discover that in June it only takes two fingers to steer your car.

.....you discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.

.....you actually burn your hand opening the car door.

.....you break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 A.M.

.....your biggest motorcycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death"?

.....you realize that asphalt has a liquid stage.

.....the potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter.

.....the cows are giving evaporated milk.

.....farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.

IT'S SO DRY IN Missouri that the Baptists are starting to baptize by sprinkling, the Methodists are using wet-wipes, the Presbyterians are giving rain checks, and the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into water!

Prayers please

My niece Kami could sure use some prayers right now.  She just moved into an apartment complex in Little Rock, AR and lost everything in a fire.  The building is a complete loss.  She even lost her car keys, but she and her dog got out safe.  She had not started her renters insurance yet.  She had just gotten a job with a school, but it won't start until the school year does.  She is a wonder Christian mom to a son who is in college and was away at school at the time of the fire.

I lost most everything in a fire in 2001.  You don't realize what you are missing for years-when you go looking for something that you no longer have.  What hurts the most is loosing the photos, kids art and school work and items such as those.

Please keep her in your prayers.  Some friends of hers have started a bank account for her for donations.

This was her facebook status this morning:

"This is self-therapy for my current PTSD symptoms:

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

Planetarium in St Joseph MO is open to the public

On a personal note, our family has visited here a couple of times.  Some of the shows, do support evolution, so please screen them (the descriptions are very accurate).  They are high quality and you feel as if you are flying thru space as you watch them....

IF YOU GET MOTION SICKNESS....You might not want to watch the roller coaster thing at the end of the videos----its cool to watch, but my stomach had issues.

You must be on time, as the door is locked at show time.  YOU CANT GET IN IF YOU ARE LATE.  The room is darkened, seats recline and if someone opens the door to the lighted hallway, it ruins it, so late entries are prohibited.....

MWSU has an amazing planetarium.  It was recently remodeled, and stocked with an amazing array of awesome educational shows!

Check out the planetarium's website for details on shows, dates, tickets, contact info!

A great way to include science education in a fun "theatre" experience!

St Joseph MO area--need a music credit????

Informational Meeting for Griffon Junior Singers
Monday, July 16 – 6:30 pm
Missouri Western State University-St Joseph MO

Kemper Auditorium – First Floor Spratt Hall
(map can be found at http://www.missouriwestern.edu/map/;   park in Lot C)

As previously announced, Darren Verbick (Elementary Fine Arts Coordinator for St. Joseph Public Schools) and Ashley Kempt (Music Instructor at Noyes Elementary) have assumed the roles of Directors of Griffon Junior Singers. They are eager to assume responsibility for this long-standing program of vocal performance excellence.   They have wonderful ideas for the growth and development of Griffon Jr Singers and plan to expand on the excellent foundation of choral music education that is in place.

Missouri Western State University will strive to be widely inclusive in our recruitment of singers, and will focus on local and regional performance opportunities that will be within financial reach of most families, using fund-raising activities to assist those families for whom even regional travel is cost-prohibitive.

For 2012-2013, Griffon Junior Singers will be reorganized into two levels – Prelude Choir (grades 2- 5, directed by Ashley) and Premiere Choir (grades 5 – 10, directed by Darren).  Both will practice on Wednesday nights, with practices beginning at 5:15 pm.

We are in the process of revising the Griffon Junior Singers Web site (see http://www.wi.missouriwestern.edu/Arts/gjs.asp).  Following the July 16 meeting, the Web site will include a summary of the information presented, plus a brief video by Darren and Ashley.

We hope you will attend the July 16 meeting, and that you will share our excitement for the 2012-2013 Griffon Junior Singers season.

Fair, July 4 and Camp

Late June thru the first week of August is one of our business times of the year.  Its hay season, science camp,  church camp, Girl Scout Camp, CIY ( Christ in Youth), County 4H fair, July 4, family reunion and gardening.

Part of the girls 4H projects have already been turned in, but we still have the small animal show to go along, with the speech contest.

Sunday afternoon Em leaves for church camp again (so far she has done one week as a camper and one week as a helper), and the twins start Girl Scout camp as helpers for the younger scouts.
So, it will be quieter around here this week.

The garden is doing well, but we are having to water the beds every other night.  We did have a setback with some giant green worms eating the potato plants, but we overcame them...

Emily painted this bale for the July 4th party we had.  The bale sits by the edge of our long driveway as you enter.

Ugly hungry beasts...We picked them off, used one application of sevan dust and haven't seen any since.  Five of them stripped my potato plants in less than 9 hours.
July 4 we had our church, my family and my husbands family up for a cookout.  Our county is under a no burn order, so fireworks were very much limited--to stuff on the ground.  But all the kids still had fun.
