Some of what is listed are a regular co-op, others are simply groups that get together for activities, such as music, band, PE or mom's day out.

Our homeschool coop is changing it up a bit
At least for this semester, our homeschool coop is changing direction. Instead of having all traditional in house weekly classes, we are adding 2 field trips a month. So, on week 1, we have coop and learn about what we will be doing on week 2, and on week 2 we will have a field trip. On week 3, we will discuss what we learned on week 2 and do an appropriate reinforcement activity, and discuss what we will see on week 4. The kids will be divided up by age groups so the learning will be on their levels.
I am looking forward to it as there are many things in the Kansas City area I haven't seen or taken the girls to yet. Some of our field trips will be free ones, others won't, but doing it with coop means we will qualify as a school group and get a group rate.
On regular coop meeting days, we will continue to meet at our Independence MO location.
On field trip weeks, we will meet at our field trip location.
So far, its not too late to join, so if you want more information--contact me. Fees are $10 per family for the semester, plus any field trip fees (and sack lunches).

Finally, our Coop Valentine Party
Last Monday coop (and all most of the public schools in the area) were closed due to the snow.
So, today at coop the kids finally got to have their Valentine Party, complete with making boxes during first hour.
The older kids all pitched in to help the younger ones.
They had a lot of fun.

Unusual random facts about presidents
One of the coop classes that I am teaching this semester, for the younger kids, is Odd Facts in US History. Last week we learned about some ship wrecks. The ships we learned about were found in odd places, due to rivers changing course over time. One was found in a California desert, and of course we also learned about Kansas City's Steamboat Arabia, found buried in a corn field where the Missouri River had been over 100 years ago.
Today we are going to learn some weird, usual, or unknown facts about some of our US Presidents and the white house. Here are a few that we will cover.
U.S. Grant, while President was issued a speeding ticket for $20 for riding his horse too fast down a Washington street. He was also the first President to run against a woman candidate, Virginia Woodhull the nominee of the “Equal Rights Party” in 1872.
James Garfield could perform a very unique parlor feat that entertained many. He could write in Latin with one hand, while writing in Greek with the other hand at the same time.
Thomas Jefferson was an avid inventor who is credited with inventing the coat hanger… hideaway bed….and dumbwaiter.
Herbert Hoover’s son had 2 pet alligators. He was also the first President to have a telephone in the White House.
Jimmy Carter was the first President born in a hospital.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the USA, is said to be related to 11 other Presidents.
James Madison barely weighed 100 pounds.
Warren Harding played poker at least twice a week and once put an entire set of White House china up to stake his hand and he lost the hand and they china.
President William Howard Taft got stuck in his bathtub on his Inauguration Day and had to be pried out by his attendants. He was over 300 pounds

Only one president has ever gotten married in the White House. It was Grover Cleveland and in 1886 he married 21-year-old Frances Folsom (28 years his junior), who he was the legal guardian of after her father, a close friend, had died.

Homeschool Coop
Today the twins registered for their classes for the fall semester of our homeschool coop. Our coop is located in Independence MO. If you want information about joining our coop, let me know and I can email you the information for our director. It is NOT to late to join, as we don't begin until the Monday after Labor Day. Last semester we met on Fridays, this semester we will be meeting on Mondays. So far, it appears some of our usual families will not be joining us, but it also looks like we have a couple of new families.
Coops are a great way for kids to meet other kids, and parents to network and get new homeschooling ideas. They also help in that kids can take a class in a subject that may not be your specialty, but is of another parent/teacher.
The twins are excited that it will be starting back up, as they have missed some of their coop friends over the summer months.
Emily, however, is a different story. She decided that for this semester she wanted to try public school (her first time). While she was at CIY (Christ In Youth) this summer, she drew a card that told her to be a witness at her school. So, we are trying it out. So far, I am not convinced it is the right choice for us. We got off to a rough start. I had called ahead, and arranged an appointment to have her tested, meet the principal, tour the school and pick her classes. When we got there, the principal then informed us they could not test her at that time. Then we were told the next day she could not pick her classes or even start school until after she was tested and that she may not be tested until after school started and her results were back.... Our tour turned into wandering the building ourselves, and a nice janitor woman kind of showed us the upstairs. After putting my foot down, and contacting the state board of education, they suddenly could test her the next day. Her test results were great--and she tested on college level in most subjects.
However, she had 16.5 credits on her transcript, and the school refused to accept her transcript. They only gave her credit for 7, which is what most freshman have. Then they put her in health, which she has already had, and gave her Biology I. Finally the principal changed it to Biology II, but she has already had both Biology I and Biology II. So, she is repeating 2 classes that she tested high on.
I don't understand the purpose of the testing if she isn't allowed to pick her classes based on the test results. She is enjoying it for now, but this may be her only semester there. She worked hard for those 16.5 credits and to have the school district not recognize them is not acceptable.

Last day of homeschool coop
Today was our last day of homeschool coop until the fall. The girls are going to miss going, and I am going to miss the kids that were in my classes! I was a teacher for one and an aid for two others. But, the girls have contact information for most of their coop friends, so I am sure they will be staying in touch over the summer months, and we are planning on having them all out for a cookout in May as well.
The class I taught was "Fire and Personal Safety". The kids I had were older kids. We covered a variety of subjects the last few months, including some basic first aid, floods, snow and ice storms, identifying storm clouds and weather patterns, tornado, earthquake, what to put in a car kit and house kit, making a home escape route, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (each student was also given an alarm to place in their room or in their home), kitchen and home fire safety, using a fire extinguisher and studying the various careers associated with fire science. One week they had a hazmat fireman come in. Today, for our final class, Captains Mike and Richelle with Independence Fire Dept came. We set up a burn pan, and the kids got hand on experience using the fire extinguishers to put out the propane fueled burner. They all did very well and managed to extinguish the fire. As the final hour was almost over, they arranged for pumper #3 to come and as all the coop kids were dismissed, they got to come out and tour the truck. The truck was a big hit for the younger ones.

New Coop
Well, our previous homeschool coop is taking a break, while they hunt for a new building, so we have joined a new one, that has been started by some of the old coop members. We do have to travel a bit further, but it is good to be back in a coop again. Today was registration, meet and great day, and formal classes begin next Friday. The girls are excited to see some of their friends again. Our old group was much larger (close to 400 kids) and offered kids 4 class periods, with a break in the middle. This one offers only 3 classes, but they still had a variety to chose from. It meats in the Sugar Creek Missouri area. Also, there is a new coop in Cameron as well.
I will be teaching again, and I have to admit I have missed it! This semesters class will be on safety. We will do some fire safety, smoke alarms, escape routes, electrical safety, calling 911, have a fire dept and ambulance visit, storm spotting and taking cover during a storm, some basic first aid, making survival kits and a little bit more

New NW Missouri Homeschool coop forming in Hamilton
Home school families of NW Missouri ,
LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Home School Cooperative has been presented with the opportunity to rent rooms in the old Hamilton High School, in Hamilton Missouri, which has been acquired by Christian Legacy Academy .
We would like to begin holding cooperative meetings there when school starts for the 2010-2011 school year.
We will meet each Friday, September to May. Parents must be willing to teach or volunteer in some way for coop classes. It would not be a drop off program. We hope to keep fees very low.
The school has a gym with a stage, kitchen, science room with sink, numerous classrooms of various sizes, a large play area with playground equipment. It looks like the perfect opportunity for our organization. We will be able to use classrooms as needed.
Are you interested in meeting weekly for 3-4 hours? Sessions would be 8-12 weeks. Let us know the number of children in your family who would be participating.

Coop needs a new home
Things are starting to look up again-sort of. My dad was released from the hospital yesterday with no long term damage from his fall. He will be sore for awhile I would think.
Our 4H group is starting to work on their projects. Tonight the kids who are doing photography are meeting. In a couple weeks, more project groups will be starting as well. That just means we are getting closer to the fair and SUMMER!
The girls are working on their spelling words for the upcoming spelling bee. There are some pretty tough words on the list and some we have to look up, and others that we can not even find in the dictionary.
On the down size, our homeschool coop is not meeting this semester. Basically we lost the building we had been meeting in. So, our leadership team is trying to find us a new location before the fall semester starts. Meanwhile, we will try to meet with others every month or so to keep friendships active and for the kids to socialize some. It is sad that we lost the location we were at, as it was the perfect location. So, if anyone out there in the North KC/Kearney area has a large facility that will house around 400 kids plus their parents with rooms for classrooms, let us know!! We meet once a week. A large church or empty school would be perfect.

New semester begins at coop
Today was the first day of the fall semester at our homeschool coop. We started out with a group assembly, so today's class times were shortened somewhat. All the kids were very excited to see each other again. Coop meets weekly on Friday afternoons.
I am teaching two classes this semester, and aiding in a third. I teach "Awesome America" twice (2 different age groups) and then aid in divers ed.
In the past, our coop has offered 4 class periods per semester per student, but this semester we are only offering three class periods. Classes my daughters are taking include Awesome America, baton, debate (a 2 hour block), Prairie Days, yearbook, The People in your Neighborhood, Games Galore, and PE Sports. Our wonderful coop also offers choir, band, photography and many many more classes for newborn through twelfth grade. We have 300 and some students and close to 80 or 90 families (at least those were our numbers last semester). One parent from each family acts as a teacher or a teachers aid. Classes change from semester to semester. In the past I have taught classes on the weather, US Presidents and Missouri.

Free Magazine, Sorry Pigs, Fences and 4H
If you live in Missouri, you can receive a free subscription of the Missouri Conservation Magazine. But did you know there is also a free magazine for kids? Our pigs are rather put out at us right now. For some reason, all 6 of them got it into their heads that they were dogs, because in the country dogs can roam free. They also learned to climb panels like a ladder (in addition to rooting under them). JD and I had planned on reworking the fence over the weekend, but that is when he injured his neck and back. So, we had a couple of homeschooling brothers from our homeschool coop come and work on it. (I would recommend these two teens to anyone. They worked hard and got it done right.) Then we woke up the pigs (who were sleeping in the barn) and moved them back into the pen. It was rather interesting to watch the pigs as they discovered the electric fence. At first, they all gathered into a huddle and just stared at it. In fact, I don't think the pigs slept all night-I think they just stared in disbelief at the fence. Even though they all watched each other get shocked, one by one they had to go touch it and see (feel) for themselves with their nose. Now they are mad...They are acting like we have never seen before--just laying there looking at the wire.
We had our planning meeting last night for our new 4H group. We were very impressed with the turnout. We had 25 families who were either at the meeting, or called/emailed and said they were interested. Quite a few of those who expressed interest are homeschoolers. Personally I think 4H and scouts are two of the best programs a homeschooler can join. There are many activities that can be combined into homeschooling lessons, or that can spark interest in researching an idea further.
This afteroon the girls picked their classes for our homeschool coop which starts back upon Friday. They are excited and ready to see their friends again.

Last day of coop
Yesterday was our last day (until this fall) of homeschool coop. Tuesday evening is our spring program. The girls and I have made a lot of friends at coop. It is really a good program that they have.
Although we will miss not being at coop, this is the time we will be doing some field trips instead. Local places include, Jessie James house and muesuem in Kearney, Pony Express attractions in St Jo, Shatto Dairy in Osborn, Fort Osage in Sibley MO, Mt Gillead in Kearney MO, Liberty has 2 water spray parks, a water park in Independence, numerous conservation parks around, Smithville Lake, Watkins Woolen Mill, Arrowrock MO, Harry Truman Library in Independence and more.
We will also be involved in 4H horsemanship and getting ready for the fair.
We homeschool year around so there will be plenty of things to do.
This afternoon the girls, my nephew and my brother and I will be heading to the Kansas Speedway for the truck races. Hopefully the rain and storms will hold off until after the race. Tomorrow we will be back at the track again, and then in September. I have a cooler packed for eating in the parking lot, water to take (I'm too cheap to pay $4.50 for a bottle of water), trail mix and other snacks. I also packed 6 of the little walmart rain ponchos--FYI they are 88 cents at Walmart. $7 at the track.....

Our homeschool coop
Someone emailed me and asked where our homeschool coop was located. We go to New Life Homeschool Fellowship where we meet each Friday while coop is in session. It is located in Kearney MO. I would highly recommend it to any homeschooler in the KC, St Joseph or Cameron area.

Our coop has 2 semesters a year--fall and spring. Each is normally 10-12 weeks in length. We run from 12:30 to 4:30 and students take 4 classes each semester. On a normal Friday, we have 2 classes then a break for snacks and kids can play in the gym, then we resume for our last 2 classes.
The website shows the last semester class offerings and schedules. We offer classes for newborn through 12th grade.
Our coop has 2 open house/programs a year. Our next one is Tues April 28 in the evening. We have a talented group of teachers and students.

My first post
After having numerous people tell me I should start a blog about homeschooling and farming/homesteading, I decided I will finally do it. I am not a computer savy person, so this is a learning experience for me. So here it goes.
Yesterday morning it started snowing with a little sleet in it while the girls and I were at the library. Here at the farm, we have between a dusting and an inch, depending on how the wind blows. But it is icy in spots, bad enough for the girls 4H horsemanship to be cancelled. In the city however, it must be much worse and many activities have been cancelled. It remains below freezing, so the girls are having to change out the rabbits water bottles, and check the heaters in the stocktank and the chicken waterer several times a day. The temperature isn't expected to be any warmer tomorrow.
Right now my girls are on a semester break from our homeschool coop, but not from school. We finished up our coop semester with a winter program and will be on break until the first of February. Our coop meets once a week on Fridays where each student takes 4 classes. Most of the classes are taught by parents. Last semester I taught 2 classes in weather, and aided in a pregrammer class on the human body, and also aided in a class on scrap booking. The kids really enjoy the coop. Classes vary each semester, but usually include band, choir, various PE classes, sewing, watercolor, painting, french, spanish....tons of things. We have almost 100 families and over 300 kids in ou coop. Next semester I am down for 2 classes--US Presidents (we will learn about a new president each week), and American Indians. If requested, I will also teach the weather class again. It was a big hit last semester and I had over 60 students.

Yesterday morning it started snowing with a little sleet in it while the girls and I were at the library. Here at the farm, we have between a dusting and an inch, depending on how the wind blows. But it is icy in spots, bad enough for the girls 4H horsemanship to be cancelled. In the city however, it must be much worse and many activities have been cancelled. It remains below freezing, so the girls are having to change out the rabbits water bottles, and check the heaters in the stocktank and the chicken waterer several times a day. The temperature isn't expected to be any warmer tomorrow.
Right now my girls are on a semester break from our homeschool coop, but not from school. We finished up our coop semester with a winter program and will be on break until the first of February. Our coop meets once a week on Fridays where each student takes 4 classes. Most of the classes are taught by parents. Last semester I taught 2 classes in weather, and aided in a pregrammer class on the human body, and also aided in a class on scrap booking. The kids really enjoy the coop. Classes vary each semester, but usually include band, choir, various PE classes, sewing, watercolor, painting, french, spanish....tons of things. We have almost 100 families and over 300 kids in ou coop. Next semester I am down for 2 classes--US Presidents (we will learn about a new president each week), and American Indians. If requested, I will also teach the weather class again. It was a big hit last semester and I had over 60 students.
