Danny Cox, well-known songwriter and folksinger, joins with TYA Artistic Director Gene Mackey to create a new musical theatre production about the colorful late nineteenth century black cowboys of the United States. This play commemorates their history and celebrates their contributions to the Old West.

Free site for reading comprehension test
I have plugged it before, but I like to remind people of Bookadventure.com during the summer. It is a free site, sponsored by Sylvan Learning. It is very simple to use.
First, the parent sets up an account for their child. Then your child reads a book and you find it on the site. Then up pops a reading comprehension test for that book. If you don't answer enough questions correctly, they can review the book and retake the test.
Kids earn points as they do this. Then the points transfer into prizes. Prizes can be as simple as a bookmark you download and print off to a 6 month subscription to Highlights Magazine.

Free sources for homeschoolers (and teachers, and kid group leaders)
I have mentioned numerous times that we get a lot of our resources free. Several people have asked me what my sources are. So, I will start listing some of them, and I am asking my readers and followers to join in and add their sources as well.
A few are not open to homeschoolers, but are open to scout leaders, 4H leaders, public school teachers....I am a 4H leader, and work with scouts and other youth activities, and sub teach, so, often even though I homeschool, I still qualify. Some will also send materials if you belong to a coop and plan to show the video or use the lesson plan in the coop.
Some of these also have an option of sending you an email daily or weekly to update you with what they have added to their site. Many also have links to more sites.
Free videos--there are many sources, but 2 I like the best are:

Another great resource is our Department of Conservation (state level). For Missouri it is located at http://www.mdc.mo.gov/teacher/classroom.htm but you will want to check on all the links and the entire site as well. From this site, and mailings we are received from them we have learned to identify Missouri trees and plants, and have learned about our wildlife and some Missouri history as well. You can also visit a state park and receive lots of brochures and information as well as talk with a park ranger. Many parks also have free hands on programs for kids as well.
Countrymart Grocery stores also have a neat link--it is really designed to advice you of sales, but they always include a recipe or two. Since my girls are actively collecting recipes for their recipes as part of an ongoing home-ec assignment, we like their weekly emails as well. You will need to ask at your local store what the web address is--ours doesn't actually have a website, but rather a weekly newsletter we receive via email.
Another great online source is your public library. Some even have online homework help, which is nice to use sometimes if your child doesn't understand how you are explaining something. Often hearing someone say the same thing, but worded differently is a great help. Some books are available on line as well as genealogy information.

Most companies will send you free information and resources if you send them an email. We sent one to Heinz, and got neat books about how they make catsup and relish, as well as some pencils. Georgia Pacific sent us some free rulers and posters about various trees and logging, and how they plant new trees to replace what they log.
My girls each have an "animal notebook". It is a 3 ring notebook and we find the animals online, and either print off a picture of them or a coloring page to color of that animal or draw it (sometimes we add photos also while we are at the zoo. We also fill in a page that tells about that animal. No cost involved.
OK. That is a few of mine that come to mind, but there are thousands of them out there. Also, don't forget sources such as your extension office. Worksheets are everywhere, just google "free worksheets math" or "free worksheets science"...

Free Kansas City Zoo trips for teachers & 3 family members
The Kansas City zoo has partnered with the Kansas City Environmental Educatior's Network (KCEEN) to host a day at the KC zoo for teachers.
This event is on September 26, 2009 from 9:30-2:00 at the zoo.
You must present a teacher ID upon admission.
Free events include admission for yourself and 3 family members, rides, giveaways and a sneal preview of educational resources and programs to use in the classroom and at the zoo.

Time to enroll for Pizza Huts free program
Now is the time for homeschoolers to enroll for the 2009 Pizza Hut Book-It program for this fall. This program allows students in kindergarten through 6th grade to earn a free pizza each month from October through March if the students meet their reading goals.

More cold weather & we got eggs again!!!!
Yesterday we went to a wedding. It was one of the best weddings I have been to. The weather was perfect for it, in the 60's. Then last night it very suddenly got real, real cold. And windy. One of those bone chilling goes right through your coat kind of cold winds. It is still cold today. I often think God has a sense of humor, and this wild weather is one of his jokes on mankind....60 on Saturday, 30 on Sunday, 70 on Monday, 20 and ice on Tuesday... Then he laughs at the people in shorts....
The only downside is somehow I managed to sprang my left thumb getting ready for the wedding. (I did it putting on pantyhose, you don't even want to know the rest of that story...) It is still quite sore today. (Another reason why not to wear those darn things)
I have been very lazy lately on my coupons and rebates. I used to be into it very big, and after I moved to the farm I kind of slowed down into granny gear. My brother teased me something awful when I moved, because he had the job of moving my shampoo box after I packed. With coupons, sales and rebates, shampoo is very easy to get free at Walgreen, CVS and Dollar General. So, I had about 48 or 49 bottles of shampoo and conditioner. (Why would i turn it down when its free??) Well, I have now used up my FREE supply (yes Tim it is gone-it lasted 2 1/2 years) so time to start back. The best items to get for free are shampoo, conditioner, deoderants and toothpaste. Our Dollar General often will sell shampoo for 75 cents so I have a lot of fun when I get a 75 cent off or more coupon. (Usually suave or white rain). Doesn't take much to entertain, me does it??
I think I am going to try and grow some celery (Amish wedding food) in the garden this year. I hear it is fairly easy to grow, but difficult to find the seeds. I have only made it through one seed catalogue so far, so am keeping an eye out for some seed.
After church, we stopped at the store to get a paper, and since my hens quit laying some eggs. Let me tell you, it really hurt to buy eggs when I have a coup full of hens and a rooster. Needless to say, I paid $1.99 for a dozen of white puny city eggs, and came home and found my hens have decided to start laying their nice big brown ones again.....
