If you are in the Liberty MO area, I recommend this one

This is for all families, not just homeschoolers. As a volunteer first responder, married to a volunteer fire fighter and a fire fighter cadet daughter.....I highly recommend this and any like it.
******************************
Is your family prepared for an emergency? Come to the First Annual Liberty MO Prepared Fair, Saturday, August 1, from 10:00-4:00 at the Liberty Community Center. Professionals from many fields, including the school district, city, county and federal agencies will explain their response to widespread emergencies and pandemic flu. You will also get tips on developing your own family response plan. There will be food and fun with events for the entire family.

The Liberty MO Community Center is located beside the middle school.

******************************

Most towns of any size offer events like this. This also makes a great project for kids, regardless of public schooled or homeschooled. If your kids are older, they can do this on their own, if not, help them! Check/Do the following:

check/install smoke alarms & batteries.
Make a map of your home and the exits.
Pick a meeting spot away from your home where you would meet for a fire or gas leak
Know where and how to shut off the water
Plan a fire drill
Plan a tornado drill
Know where to hide in a tornado. If possible have some items kept there such as flashlight, first aid kit, small radio (transistor radio in my day...), extra batteries, bottles of water, blankets
Plan a "tree" of relatives names/numbers/addresses to contact in the event of a disaster requiring you to relocate
Teach little ones their phone numbers and addresses

Sensory movies for those with Autism

For families w/ kids on the autism spectrum, or who otherwise have sensory and attention issues, this could be a great deal. It's available all over the country. Go to the Augism Society of America website and check it out: http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=sensoryfilms

AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program.

In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC’s “Silence is Golden®” policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned.

CHECK OFTEN FOR SPECIAL DISCOUNTS AND INFORMATION

It is finally starting to slow down around here..

I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. VBS is over, the county 4H fair is over, and Emily is at the final week of camp for the summer.

This week until Saturday, Emily is at CIY in Bolivar MO. The church took a large group of kids, filling 2 cars and the church van.

Saturday we have a baby shower at church, then Emily returns and we head to Maryville to our annual Shinabarger family reunion which is held on Sunday. Although it is the Shinabarger reunion, few Shinabargers attend--but mainly Espeys. However, since the Espeys are the direct line of the Shinabargers, it is still the Shinabarger reunion. I think now there are more Shinabargers in Indiana than Missouri, but we are the same family.

When we return from the reunion, we will be bringing back my niece and nephew, and my 3rd cousin (who is my cousins grand daughter). So, we will have 6 kids for the rest of the week. We have lots of fun things planned--we plan to fish (my nephews order), go swimming at Smithville Lake, visit the Shatto dairy in Osborn, possibly visit the Plattsburg pool, and attend a special group night at Coolcrest with unlimited mini golf and go carting through JD's employers credit union. If it rains, we will hit free bowling in Liberty. We also plan on seeing if some other cousins who live nearby can join us a couple of times during the week. Several of them are working on their math multiplication facts, so I am sure we will be playing multiplication Bingo a lot also. Math facts are more fun when they are a game.

Great discount indoor water park

Our family has been here one time and we loved it! We got to go before the park was opened. Coco Key invited all the KC area homeschoolers to come for free to test it out and so that they could film some commercials and PR pieces to advertise the park. Since the public schools were in session, they invited the homeschoolers. During the school season last year, coco key had discounts on "homeschoolers days".

I love supporting businesses that support homeschoolers, so I am passing this email on to you. The majority is inside, so this is a good one for rainy days or to avoid sunburn.

This is located in Kansas City at the intersection of I70 and Blue Ridge--catty corner from the Royals Stadium.

Mommy and Me Mondays are back at CoCo Key Water Resort!

Every Monday starting July 13th to September 28th, you and your child(ren) can purchase a Day Pass to CoCo Key for only $10 each!

OR,

You can also purchase your $10 ticket at the Front Desk of CoCo Key from 10am to 1pm.

You can buy food and drinks there, but I think you can also take in your own sandwiches and stuff--of course no glass containers.

Makes a great PE credit for swimming!!

Horses

This weekend is our county horse show for 4H. IF it isn't rained out and postphoned. I hate to say it, but I almost hope it does get pushed back a couple weeks....It has rained so much lately that many of the club practices have been canceled, so they have not gotten in as much practice as I would have liked. We do practice at home, but us girls are new to the horse thing, we are not sure we are doing everything correctly. JD is well versed in horses, but of course, he is at work while we are practicing.

As usual, we were stood up by the horse farrier. Actually by 3 of them. I have been trying to get one out here to the farm since late May. 3 times appointments were made and not kept, and they don't even return my calls when I call to try and reschedule. With the upcoming show, we were gettin desperate. (Evidently male farriers have a rep for standing people up). So, Monday I got ahold of Christina O'Rear of Centerview MO. She is a farrier and a trainer. I went through school with her parents. She was able to take the horses so Tuesday morning I loaded up kids and horses and we went to Centerview. I highly recommend her and her work. She charged us $25 per horse for a much needed trim. (She normally charges $30 but we got a discount for coming to her). She did an excellent job and was there as she said she would be. http://orearfarm.tripod.com/index.html She is in town and easy to get to and plenty of parking room/trailer backing room as she is right by the MFA with a large parking lot. Since it is just one town over from my parents, they drove over and watched the work, then we all went to Perrons in Centerview to eat. They have the best onion rings ever!

July 4

Today is July 4. Our countries birthday. It is on this day that we celebrate the approval of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in 1776. (Yet it was actually approved on July 2 1776 and most didn't sign it until in August.)

In July 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation was 2.5 million.

I find it odd that the majority of our US flags are made in China, as well as most of our fireworks used in our celebrations. (Yet, we make most of Mexico's flags...)

Source http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/011920.html

As we shoot off our fireworks, attend parades, visit with family & friends, cookout & BBQ, go camping, we need to remember what our founding fathers fought and died for. Our country was formed for freedom. Freedom of religion, speech and from Great Britians rule. Some of our freedoms we are now loosing, such as the freedom to pray in schools. We need to pray that we will not loose sight of what our country was created to stand for.

On July 3, 1776 John Adams wrote the following letter to his wife Abigail:

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

John Adams had the idea right, he just predicted the date of celebration wrong. Notice that he mentioned "God Almighty"? That is the same God who some people are wanting all notions of removed from our money.

Another interesting set of facts:

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, founding fathers and the only two men who signed the Declaration of Independence that later become president, both died on the same day July 4, 1826 just hours apart on America's 50th anniversary. President James Monroe died five years later, on July 4, 1831, but he was not a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Be careful this 4th, remember to remember the past and thank God for our freedoms. Even if you are not a supporter of the current president, we still need to pray for him and guidence.

Right now we are off to some friends house to eat. The girls have done some baking which we will take with us.

I will be watching the fireworks while scratching. I have poison ivy on my hands, arms, legs and face. It is not pleasant. Thursday I went to the doctor and had a shot for it, but I am still breaking out, although my hands are getting better--probably because I have been doing the dishes with some bleach in the water.

Homeschool Book sale

There will be a Used Curriculum and Book Sale next Thursday, July 9th from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Spot in Independence, MO. It is located on Noland Road behind Fuddruckers, about half way between I-70 and 40 HWY.

The prices are as follows:

Textbooks: $1
Manipulatives: $1
Books (novels, chapter books, etc.): 50 cents
Small children's books: 10 cents
Kits: $2

There may be a few sets that are a little higher, but nothing will be more than $3. We want to be a blessing to the homeschool community. All proceeds will go to HEART Theatre Company.

There are hundreds of books/items that were donated from many sources, and we will not be able to sort them until the morning of the sale. Therefore, please do not ask about specific book availability. I do know that as we were unloading the boxes I saw Apologia science (one of the high school books) and Saxon math. There was also lots of A Beka, Bob Jones, etc. I don't remember exact titles, just the brands. There are lots of miscellaneous items as well.
