Once again, the Ashland school district, with full co-operation of the Ashland newspaper, has posted a notification that home schools are "required" to send information in to the district.

Missouri statutes do NOT REQUIRE HOME EDUCATORS TO REGISTER WITH THE LOCAL DISTRICT.
"School districts across the state have been adopting this "policy" with more and more frequency in recent years. The law has not changed!!! The law clearly states that we "may (not "must") register with the school district in which we reside. This wording was very intentionally crafted.

BE WARNED: Once you accede to the demand to register, you may be pressured to do so annually. It will be difficult (but not impossible) to undo this request for oversight from your school officials!

HSLDA lawyer, Scott Woodruff, drafted a letter several years ago for the benefit of residents of Ashland, MO. He emphasized that this the information printed by the paper is false and is not written into the legal requirements for homeschooling.
FHE's position is:
FHE strongly recommends that youdo NOT formally register because
a) it offers no proof that you are educating your child
b) it does not benefit your child's learning
c. voluntary registration may imply that you look to the state for permission

St. Joseph district has also been persistent in their demands that home educators file an intent annually. HSLDA and FHE have been working diligently to inform families that this is a policy not consistent with what the law says.
Please consider the difference between school "policy" and "state law"!!

New Sullivan MO on going event for teen girls.

New teen girls bible study group!

It is in Sullivan Mo. It is called Proof.

PROOF is a bible study group for girls ages 13+ that was created to uplift our teenage girls in the local community. It is a type of Music Ministry. Each PROOF study uses a popular Christian song and builds upon the biblical foundations that the song tells.

I hope that by using Christians music with biblical based lyrics the girls will be able to associate daily life situations with the module themes and apply the foundations taught to their daily walk closer to Jesus Christ.

Classes are held EVERY OTHER MONDAY starting August 10th 2015 at 975 Highway Af, Sullivan, MO 63080. From: 4:30 - 5:45 pm.

REGION 3 USED BOOK SALE  &  ENRICHMENT FAIR

Used Book Sale & Enrichment Fair  1:00-3:30pm

SET UP FOR THE BOOK SALE BEGINS AT  11:00am

 

Admittance is free to the Used Book Sale and Enrichment Fair.  The cost to sell used curriculum or have an Enrichment Fair space for your group will be $10.00 per space.  Used book sale participants will have a table provided.  We have a limited number of 8’ tables.  Those that sign up first will get an 8’ table.  The rest will get a 60’ round table.  Enrichment Fair participants will have an 8’ spot but they will need to bring their own table.     I will notify you by email and by returning your check if we are full.  

Set up for the curriculum fair will begin at 11:00.  We ask you not to sell anything until 12:30, when those who have set up or will clean up will get to shop early.  Those volunteers will be wearing colored wristbands.  Please do not sell to anyone without a wristband on.

 

We must receive payment for your table space to reserve it.  An email address is required to send you the confirmation and instructions.  

 

Do you want an opportunity to shop before the general public is admitted?  Volunteer to help set up Friday night at 7:00 and/or clean up Saturday from 3:30-5:00!  If you are interested, please contact Jacinda at gregandjacinda@gmail.com

** HOW MUCH VEGGIES TO GROW TO FEED YOUR FAMILY **

This is a much thought about and debated topic. How much do you really need to plant to feed your family? How many seeds or plants do you need to plant if you want to feed your family fresh Veggies during the growing season, and then can, freeze or dehydrate enough to last the rest of the year?

I think it's important to consider also that each person in the Family needs a certain amount of calories per day, depending on how active they are. This would play into your choice of the mix of veggies that you would grow; given that some veggies like beans have a higher calorie count than say lettuce.

The chart below gives you a good idea of how much of each plant or seed you will need to plant per person, based on picking and eating them fresh. If you plan on Canning or freezing your Veggies to get thru the Winter months, you will need to plant more. I would suggest you multiply the amount list by 4 if you plan to can also.

Seeds or plants per 100-ft. row is the recommended amount or number to use for proper spacing and growth. Estimated yield per 100-ft. row is based on optimum growth, so it could be different from Family to Family. If you don't plant in 100-ft rows, then you can divide the amounts down to the size you do plant.

FOR OPTIMUM YIELDS, YOU WILL WANT TO:

1) Start Off with good Heirloom Seeds (THE SEED GUY has List below)
2) Use a good Compost/Soil mixture
3) Maintain Fertility
4) Provide enough water
4) Use Mulch
5) Control Pests ( insects, and the furry types) Companion Plants are a way to control and deter pests.

How Cool is this Bee Hive?

I have wanted bee hives for some time.  At one point, I had a guy who was going to put hives on both our farms, and in exchange we were going to get some honey, but he passed away.

This hive looks like something I could do.  We have the perfect set up here--water, shade, clover, fruit trees, vineyard......

I'm going to get some more information from this company, and start studying up on bees and honey.  I just might do it in a few years....

Back Home

First, let me say I realize at times mothers must work outside the home at times.  Other times, I believe it can actually be damaging to the family.

I recently experienced one of those "damaging"  episodes.  I was a zombie for the last 6 weeks.

I worked outside the home for 8 weeks.  Lets just say it was NOT the job for me.  I am now back home and in the last 4 days I have finally gotten the laundry caught up, and the house halfway back to order.  I worked in a very unprofessional retail environment where it was not healthy at all.  Every time I was ready to take my break or lunch, I was told to wait until they had a smoke break first (which they never clocked out for).   Never, ever in my life had I heard such concentration of bad language and drama,  I mean every other word.  It not only came from a large majority of the customers, but also from the help, from the general manager on down the line.  It often seemed like they were trying to out due each other.  I believe there were only 2 employees who were not constantly swearing, back stabbing and creating other drama.  They also would go on "witch hunts" and target one certain employee, then move on to another one a few days later.  I just could not work in an environment like this any longer.  There were also 2 employees who had anger control issues, and you  never knew when an item would get thrown, or something kicked. When I started, we had a lot of customers who came in that were Mennonite.  I noticed they were gradually dwindling in numbers.  I asked one, who always spoke to me and he said that the women and children could not longer come into our store due to the nature of the conversations they overheard.  A few days after that conversation, I turned in my notice, effective immediately.   Needless to say, I am at peace with my decision to leave there.

I just don't understand why women think they are attractive by talking and acting that way.  Do they not realize that it doesn't make them look tough, it makes them actually look insecure, cheap and trashy.  I don't get it at all.  Do they act like that in front of their parents and children??  Makes me wonder.....

In the midst of all that, my husband was seriously ill and in the hospital.  When I sent a text to my manager, the reply I received was if I wasn't going to be at  work the next day, I had to let her know by 7pm to avoid getting written up.  Rather cold and heartless I thought, considering I had not missed any prior work.  She didn't even ask how he was.

So, laundry and ironing are now caught up, kitchen has been 75% detailed, I got my stove taken apart, cleaned, and put back together.  I am getting caught up on my coupon book getting it organized, and I detailed my car.  Next, I will work on the husbands car and truck, and its time to clean the garage again.  And, I have a long list of other jobs to tackle as well.

When the right job comes along, I will take it.  But, it will not interfere with my beliefs, or my family.  But in the meantime, I'm playing catch up.

My New Garden Guide

SproutRobit is gone....But, a new site, is very similar http://www.gardenate.com/.  So, this is what I planning on using this year.

Last year squash bugs got my pumpkins-they also got them the year before.  I actually did not even plant pumpkins last year, but had some great volunteers come up from the compost pile.  And, the squash bugs got them again.  So, over the winter I have done some research.  It seems that squash bugs do not like catnip, french marigolds, dill, petunias or nasturtiums.  So, I will be planting some of these in the raised beds this year with the melons, pumpkins, squash and cucumbers.

Later this weekend I plan on starting my garlic indoors.  Can't wait.

2015 Money Saving Guide (Goal)

Every year I post this....So, here it is again....

It can be started at any time, but as most people make New Year's resolutions this time of the year, here it is again.

I should do this every year, but I'll admit, I don't.  A few years I have done double on this, by adding in some babysitting money.  On those years, this paid for our winter propane, Christmas and towards the year end taxes.  On the years I have not done this,....well, come December I wish I had....

I have had people tell me that they can not afford to do this.  If you truly can't, then just do what you can do.  

I have also had women from 2 income families tell me that they do this and also their husbands do it.  So by year end, they have double the amount.  One told me she and her husband make a contest of it to see who can save the most. 

I don't do mine in this order.  I put my November and December months during the spring time--April, May and early June, because that is when we don't have any A/C or heat bills. In November and December we have the propane bills, Thanksgiving and Christmas (gifts and a slightly higher food bill).  So, for us, this rearrangement of the schedule works.  I also put my "found money" in as well.  We have one grocery store where I always find at least 10 cents on the ground in the parking lot, several times I have found bills, and once I even found a twenty dollar bill.

If you think you can't afford it, look at what you can cut.  What about that morning coffee you get on the way to work (make it at home)??  Or a magazine subscription that you take but don't read (read it for free at the library),  or that pack of cigarettes, or that junk food??

One year in March a woman wrote in and told me she could only afford to do this by giving up her vending machine habit at work.  By March, she had already lost 8 lbs (she went walking on her breaks instead of buying a soda and candy bar) but had saved $122 thus far.  Her method was a little different.  In the early months she was putting what she would have eaten out of the machine at work into a jar.  By the end of March, she had $122 in there.  In November she told me she was still saving and losing weight and her doctor had removed her off of some of her medications as a result of the weight she had lost.  So, she was taking that money (saved from her prescription co-pay) and adding that to her money jar as well. 

Many banks require you to have a specific amount before you can open an account.  Others don't.  So shop around.  I put ours into an old money market account.  If I need to get it out, I do.  But with it in an account other than what I carry a checkbook for, I'm not going to spend it.

I found these while going through the Christmas decorations.  The younger set of twins did these when they were 3, in 2001. They are now 16.

Another favorite tool of mine

I was asked to share some of the antique tools that I use around the house.  So, I am starting with the kitchen.

Not sure if this actually qualifies as an antique or not....but, this oldie (from the 50's) gets used daily.  Often several times a day.  Its an old fashioned chopper. No electric needed, just some muscle.  I use it for olives, onions, nuts, peppers...about anything.

 I can use this, wash it and have it put back away in the amount of time it takes me to get out the electric food processor or the kitchen aid.

How to Carve a Turkey

 

Why do these things ONLY HAPPEN TO ME? Gate was open...everything ( livestock wise) was at the neighbors. As soon as the cows heard the diesel motor they came running back to the correct pasture. 

Not the horses. After running our horses back in, and closing the gate....I discover that our new neighbors also have 2 brown horses and a black horse, just as we do. Upon closer inspection....2 of the 3 horses I have are the wrong ones. I open the gate again, and after some time, manage to get the correct horses....Then I close the gate. Before I am even back in the truck....they are jumping the fence to play with the new horses...(actually, I think they are arguing over who the alpha is). So again, I sort horses and get them back. Then, over the fence comes the neighbors black horse. I moved the truck closer to him and he jumped back where he was supposed to be. I'll give it 15 minutes and they will be in the wrong pastures again. 

And, thank you Bandit for teaching the other 5 horses how to open the gate, which will now need to be wired shut. 

The weird thing, throughout the entire rodeo...birds were riding on some of the horses backs......

On the positive side, I have 4 cows who are definitely pregnant.

My head and chest cold/sinus infection is on the upswing, but chasing these guys down, as me back coughing again.

Notice this only happens when I am the only one home, or when the husband is on nights and sleeping or out of town.  Murphys law.
